It is a little known hydro reserve in the Steppes, a wind swept and lonely area up on the edge of the Tasmanian highlands.
Here are some interesting snippets about how the Lagoon was first destroyed, and then rehabilitated, by Hydro Tasmania.

Lyn organised this visit to historic Chauncy Vale, just off the highway at Bagdad. Most of us have driven past the signs pointing to Chauncy Vale for years and many have wondered what this reserve and the walks here were like. We'd heard of "They Found a Cave" (children's book and movie) and that Nan Chauncy was quite a significant figure Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-5820859691600009992023-10-30T20:49:00.007-07:002023-11-01T17:49:01.372-07:00October 2023 - Day 2 - Liffey FallsOn the second walking day of our October mini-break, the Westbury Womblers headed towards the delightful Liffey Valley. We passed by Oura Oura, the reserve created by Bob Brown and Bush Heritage Australia. This reserve contains his old cottage, which was the scene of many campaign meetings for battles to preserve Tasmanian wilderness areas.

We were again very lucky with the weather, it was perfect for walking - dry, sunny and cool. Basing ourselves in the historic village of Westbury, we scheduled three walks for the Friday and one for the Saturday. We were last here in 2018, when we conquered Mt Amos: Our Walk a Month: June 2018 - Mt Amos and Wineglass Bay.We had a few people drop out for various reasons, so in the end our jolly group was Lyn, Di, Kat, Philip, Bob, Fin, Gerwyn and Wayne. Kat, Philip, Wayne, Gerwyn, Di, Fin, Angie and Caroline were today's keen walkers. It was a lovely day, warm enough, sunny and dry :)

Wayne, Gerwyn, Di, Angie, Dorothy, Kat, Philip and Bob met at the Remarkable Cave carpark at 10am, with the morning showers clearing away nicely. The weather was excellent. The team arrived at the Hartz 'Day Centre' (which is a picnic shelter and toilets) car park, ready to set off at 11am.

The walks at Tahune Adventures, Arve River Road, near Geeveston, were suggested by Gary. The forestry based destination was badly affected by fires several years ago and most of us had not visited for some time.
Getting there: take the C631 from Geeveston, and follow the numerous signs to Tahune.

The prospect of an enjoyable walk and a good nosh instead of our usual simple picnic lured a good turnout of the walking buddies. We'd been here a couple of times before:
October 2015. November 2016.
So it would be interesting to see if anything had changed.
On a day with an inauspicious weather forecast, six of us headed hopefully into the SouthWest - Angie, Di, Fin, Summa, Wayne and Gerwyn. Kat organised our accommodation and Angie provided some walk options. Di devised an "add on" post-walk visit for the bike riders to Derby/Branxholm/North East Rail Trail. When the time came, managing to get away for our trip were: Bob, Wayne, Gerwyn, Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-66925428445968855432022-09-26T04:38:00.009-07:002022-10-24T19:49:53.601-07:00September 2022 - Fluted Cape, Bruni IslandPhilip had nominated the Fluted Cape walk for this month, at the southern end of Adventure Bay, Bruny Island. This is one of the Great Short Walks of Tassie. We'd done it before: October 2013. Di organised an overnight accommodation option in anticipation of a group of us opting to avoid the Sunday evening ferry crush. Kat pulled together the final walk instructions.

Organised by Lyn, we met at the Cubed coffee cart at the spectacular Pirates Bay Lookout for our morning coffee. With the new highway bypass of Sorell in place, it had only taken an hour to get there from the city. We last did this circuit in May 2012. Today our group comprised Bob, Wayne, Philip, Gary, Adam, Arav, Angie and Di. We'd arranged to meet at the Visitors' Centre at Mt Field at 10.30.
The first glitch was that the walkers had to start out with Angie and Di, who had been a Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-47465996598386648322022-05-30T22:45:00.002-07:002022-05-30T22:56:21.815-07:00May 2022 - Blessington Track, South ArmMany of us had missed previous visits along this 8.6km (return) riverside trail to Fort Direction, so this was a great opportunity to try again. Gary organised us, a group of eight today: Gary, Bob, Wayne, Gerwyn, Di, Summa, Angie and Fin. Our first meeting point was the Foreshore Tavern at Lauderdale, about 20 minutes drive from the CBD. Some in our group took the option of kayaking on the Lake instead, and had a great day on the water.
The walkers set out at 9.15am along the lakeside trail towards the start of the track, which is just on the north side of the village. We had a record turnout I think - Caroline, Warren, Wayne, Gerwyn, Kat, Philip, Di, Lyn, Angie, Fin, Summa, Gary, Adam, and a local guest Ian (Wayne's brother). And we were lucky with the fickle West Coast weather, hurrah!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-65674119617958390672022-03-27T23:28:00.001-07:002022-03-28T19:45:09.125-07:00March 2022 - Organpipes and Lost World (kunanyi)Wayne and Gerwyn came up with this idea for a couple of easy but scenic walks that we could combine to make a good day on the mountain.
Our schedule was: an amble from the Chalet along the Organpipes Track to the junction with the ZigZag track, and return. Snacks at the Chalet, then a short drive to the Big Bend carpark, then a short walk to The Lost World.
Our group was Wayne, Gerwyn, Bob, Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-6345654007033085042022-03-02T23:13:00.009-08:002022-03-03T20:44:12.122-08:00February 2022 - East Cloudy HeadIt was time to revisit this lovely walk, which we last did in 2014.
Di and Dorothy made a full Island Weekend of it, staying overnight in a nearby cabin and making the most of the trip to Bruny Island by squeezing in some additional short walks. Angie did the same, staying with her friend Anne and bringing her along on the walk (welcome, Anne!).
Kat, Philip, Wayne and Gerwyn came over in the Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2800532133013227668.post-63078802050316874312022-02-27T22:10:00.004-08:002022-03-27T23:34:20.851-07:00January 2022 - Devil's Throne, kunanyi/Mount WellingtonThe hardiest of our bunch took on the walk to Devil's Throne. Angie, Gary, Kat and Bob were the brave ones.
This track has been badly signposted in the past but now is well marked. You take the trail to Thark Ridge from the Big Bend carpark, and turn right at the signpost for Devil's Throne.

Lyn and I decided to revisit our "inaugural" walk-a-month in 2010 and our 2017 return visit to Cape Raoul. With luck we would see some S2H contenders passing by the Cape. On a perfect summer's day, warm and clear, and keen to make up for some serious Xmas indulgences, Lyn, Di, Kat and Philip left town at 8am.
